I wanted to make a comment about Chris Bellamy’s opinion about LDS films in the Jan. 28 edition of The Daily Utah Chronicle (“LDS films get Oscar shaft again”). He may not find movies such as “The RM” or “Singles Ward” or any other LDS films entertaining, but just because he doesn’t enjoy them does not mean that there aren’t people who do. I find them quite funny and I know several others who feel the same way. Just because they aren’t up for any Oscars certainly doesn’t mean that movies of that sort should not be produced. I don’t believe that these movies are produced merely to “spread the word,” but also because some of us “Mormons” are grateful for the opportunity to watch a movie without having to worry about seeing a sultry sex scene, repeatedly hearing the f word or watching people get blown up. And for that matter, not all of us want to see full frontal nudity, even though, appallingly, some people do.
I believe the solution to Bellamy’s little problem is quite simple: He knows that he doesn’t like that genre of films, so why doesn’t he quit watching them? Then the Mormon inside jokes he finds so revolting won’t pain him and the rest of us can laugh up a storm. It’s a good thing he told everyone he’s a Mormon, because if he hadn’t, I don’t think anyone reading his column would have been able to tell.
