The U men’s tennis team (4-1) plays its last home match until March 27 today against No. 33 Boise State at 5 p.m. in the Eccles Tennis Center.
The Utes are coming off four straight wins and will attempt to extend their streak to five against one of the premier teams in the Mountain Region, which assistant coach Graeme Cox believes is undoubtedly “the strongest.” The Broncos are 4-3 on the season and are coming off an appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. They reached their No. 33 ranking by defeating a tough William and Mary team, 6 1, and strong Oregon and Denver teams, both by 5-2 scores.
The youthful Utes, who feature four freshmen and three sophomores, will need to get more from the top of their lineup, especially No. 2 man Tomasz Gryzb, who has mustered only two wins in singles against mediocre opponents.
The bottom of the lineup, however, has been strong all season. Miron Mann has lost only one doubles match, and is otherwise undefeated in five singles matches and four doubles matches. Local Ryan Scott has looked similarly impressive, winning four out of five singles matches, most of them in convincing fashion. For the Utes to beat Boise, however, the whole lineup will have to play flawlessly and take advantage of their home turf.
“Hopefully, we will be able to use our confidence and the home court advantage and play a good match against them,” Cox said.
