Editor:
Your advertisement with the headline, “Make your mark,” located on page 7 of the April 13 issue confirmed for me yet again why I seldom read The Chronicle: poor taste.
The ad includes a cartoon of a man-with drawers dropped and under apparent exertion-squatting atop a spread of newspapers, evidently trying to “make his mark.”
The cartoon is reminiscent of the doodles of a junior high school boy, hardly what one would expect to find in the newspaper of the state’s premier institution of higher learning. The image immediately suggests to the reader the poor taste of this publication. Also by extension, the low caliber of cartoonists, writers and designers the advertisement seeks.
It’s difficult to imagine this vulgar image is truly reflective of the sentiment of the student body. It’s poor taste, just like the annual April Fool’s Day debacle and just like Danni Nutter’s sex advice column.
If The Chronicle is serious about “seeking” employees who represent the whole spectrum of students, placing ads that don’t offend a large portion of the student body would be a good way to start.
