Perhaps the Aggies’ biggest strength is their defensive line, led by end John Chick and tackle Brian Soi. However, the USU linemen have their work cut out for them as they will face the unenviable task of trying to get through one of the best front lines in the Mountain West Conference.
The Utes’ O-line proved it was worth all the hype on Friday, holding the Arizona defensive line at bay all night and keeping the Wildcats away from new quarterback Brian Johnson. Johnson didn’t get sacked at all Friday night and was rarely even pressured.
But even if the ‘Cats do break through the line and put the heat on Johnson, they still have Quinton Ganther to deal with. Ganther is one of the toughest runners to bring down in the entire conference-and it was his 177 yards of total offense that clinched the victory in the season opener.
On the flip side, the Utes’ defensive line, considered a strength before the season began, leaked like a sieve in the second half against Arizona, despite having All-American candidate Steve Fifita. The line, which has a lot of new faces this season, especially after the season-ending injury to Marquess Ledbetter, will have to shore up holes Saturday night as the Aggies are expected to take advantage of Leon Jackson III’s running abilities. If the Ute linemen aren’t careful, they could get worn down once again.
