In the Oct. 18 edition of The Chronicle, there was a photo of the demolition of the old dorms. While I did live in Van Cott Hall one summer, I really do not feel any sadness at seeing them go.
The great thing about this is that, for once, we actually have new space on campus. During the seven years I have spent on campus, all I have seen is new building after new building be built on top of parking lots.
Even at the beginning of my academic career, parking was a problem and something that people complained about. I’d be very interested to see the decline in available parking over the last seven years.
But here we have a large area of campus, right in the middle of campus, relatively speaking, available for use.
Why not show that students’ voices really do count for something and build some more parking lots? I’m sure we could find some former student who would even be willing to donate for naming rights.
Wouldn’t you much rather be known as the guy who paid for the parking lot than the guy who paid to build the latest conference room addition to the business building?
While I’m sure that the geniuses in the Park Building will find some way to turn this new space into even less available parking, I just thought I’d throw this out there before the option is completely gone.
