Swimmers conquer Rams

The U’s women’s swimming and diving squad took 11 of 16 events against Colorado State at the Ute Natatorium on Saturday night to improve to 5-0 overall in conference competition.

Ute seniors Meghan Demchuk, Amy Barefield and Arianne Kich all took home individual wins in their final home meet as the Utes won by an overall score of 158-127.

“It was a great way for our senior women to finish the season at home,” Ute head coach Michael Litzinger said. “We keep getting better and better each week, and we’re looking forward to finishing strong as we head into the conference championship meet.”

Demchuk won the 200-meter fly, Barefield took the 50-meter free and Kich led a 1-2-3 Ute finish in the 200-meter breaststroke. Juniors Amber Walter and Alison McInturff were the night’s only two-time winners, with Walter taking the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke and McInturff winning the 200 free and 500 free.

Also posting wins for the Utes were Rachael Curci (1,000 free), Shannon McQueen (200 backstroke) and Kelsey Patterson (one-meter diving). Ute A and B teams finished first and second, respectively, in the 400 medley relay.

The men’s team will join the women in Laramie to face Wyoming this Friday.
