On Sunday night some friends and I went to see the recently released movie, “Something New.” While I must admit it wasn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, I think it addresses many race relations issues that need to be addressed, and I encourage U students to go and watch it.
The movie is basically about the love story between a black professional woman and a white male landscape architect. I think this movie is a good glimpse into the lives of America’s significant, affluent African-American population.
Movies and popular culture have propagated the view of black people in America leading the “gangsta” life, but this is a detrimental stereotype-as most stereotypes are-and “Something New” shows the other side of black America and some of the issues that affluent African Americans have to deal with in the corporate world.
Another thing this movie does well is show that love can happen between any two people, and so long as it is real, color should not stop it. While inter-racial love stories featuring black men and white women are generally accepted and portrayed once in a while in Hollywood movies, there aren’t many love stories told involving a black woman and a white man, despite its regular occurrence in real life.
The love story in the movie is very sweet and romantic (good date movie, Tuesday being Valentine’s Day), and I think it represents many stories like it that need to be told.
For whatever reasons, the closest theater at which this movie is showing is the Ritz 15 Cinemas in West Valley, and it’s likely to not show for long, so I advise that people go and watch it soon-for educational purposes, if nothing else. ? ?
