Ever wonder which poet or artist is responsible for that masterpiece on the bathroom stall?
A coalition of artists from different fields in the fine arts have come together in a performance to investigate “potty language” and other phenomena of everyday life.
The resulting modern dance performance, “Minglings,” focuses on encouraging interaction between artists in different aspects of the fine arts.
“There are walls between departments of the fine arts,” said Josh Anderson, organizer of “Minglings.” “You don’t really know what other artists on campus are up to.”
Anderson, a senior in modern dance, encouraged other modern dance majors to find artists from different fields to help develop dance performances for the show.
“As an artist, I see the relationship between the arts, but I would like for the audience to get more of a taste for the fine arts,” Anderson said.
Ceramics and ballet combine to recreate a bathroom dance in “Potty Language,” choreographer Cortney Mild’s contribution to “Minglings.” A two-dimensional artist’s work is incorporated into Jess Young’s performance, and Heather Arnett worked alongside a young author for her piece.
Anderson came up with the idea for “Minglings” while applying for a fine arts grant.
“I met so many artists that had great ideas. I had no idea so many things were going on in different departments,” Anderson said.
Anderson received a fine arts grant and is using the money to produce “Minglings.” Grant funds were used to create a stipend for choreographers and the artists they worked with.
The performance is free, but a donation of $5 is appreciated. “Minglings” will be staged on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center for Dance.
