There’s more to winter than the hill

By Kirk Taylor

Not everyone skis or snowboards, but there are other options for winter recreation. Running or hiking outdoors might not be the first thing that comes to mind during the winter months, but it can provide a nice alternative to the treadmill at the gym. The trails on the Glenwild preserve are a perfect place to get out and play. Located in the foothills right off the Kimball Junction exit, access is easy. It also receives sun for most of the day, so although it might snow, it melts quickly or is packed down in short order by recreationalists. Once the trails are packed by traffic, it is not unusual to see die-hard mountain bikers rolling around alongside the runners. Although there are many climbs, most are short and low angle, which makes it perfect for that quick jog after work or Saturday afternoon jaunt.
