International Center employee awarded for work

By Keith Chalmers

When Kelly South went on a mission to Costa Rica for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she experienced a completely different culture for 18 months.

Since returning to Salt Lake City and finishing her degree at the U, South has helped students with their own international experiences by working as a study abroad adviser and in the International Studies Center, where she assists international students with visas and green card applications.

“We try to take as much of the load off of them as possible. We’ve never had one denied,” South said.

The U is recognizing South for her efforts by awarding her the General Administration District Staff Award this year.

Shanna Erickson, chair of the awards team, said South was one of 18 general administration employees nominated for the award.

“Kelly feels like she is part of a process that helps her employer and helps individuals to become better. That really gives her a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment that is tough to find in most jobs,” said Terry South, Kelly’s husband.

Brian Christiansen, administrative manager for the Office of General Council, said South works hard to help students get their visas in order.

“She understands the situation they are in,” Christiansen said. “She is helpful at easing their frustrations with the system.”

South said that she wants to help educate students and prepare them for their future.

“Education has always been really important to me. I wanted to be able to help people and help students enhance their careers,” she said.

Friends of South said she has always been a dedicated worker.

Kaatia Larsen, a former colleague and close friend, recalls working with Kelly on a national convention.

“All of the employees contributed a lot to this weekend event, but I remember Kelly staying there night after night working late hours to get things done so everything would run as smoothly as possible,” Larsen said.

Terri Crow, executive assistant vice president for Human Resources, said there are more than 900 solicitations sent to the six districts of employment across the U campus for the 24 District Staff Awards given annually.

South is the only employee from the general administration to be awarded this honor.
