Police Briefs

By Michael McFall, Staff Writer

Bong bust

Campus police busted Kevin McJames, a freshman pre-chemistry major living in the dorms, for possession of marijuana.

On Sept. 6, four officers responded to Chapel Glen 802 to investigate a report that marijuana was being smoked on the first floor. When one of the officers reached the room, the resident adviser Erin Ohrenberger opened the door for them. According to a police report, there was a strong odor of marijuana wafting out the open doorway.

“To me, it smelled like marijuana that had not yet been smoked,” said Officer Michael McPharlin. No one was present, including the suspect. Without anyone in the room, no further action could be taken.

An hour later, the officers were called back to Chapel Glen when suitemate Steven Wallace found a blue bong on the television stand. The officers confiscated the psychedelic water pipe. Wallace, a freshman computer science major, said he had seen the suspect smoking the bong with a friend earlier that night, and told the police that their speech was definitely impaired.

Campus police said they will destroy the bong, valued at $1.
Ohrenberger declined to comment.

Drunk chase

Campus police had to chase an intoxicated person down on foot Sunday night. Officer Steven Rawson asked to speak to an intoxicated minor who was being walked home at 1300 E. 800 S. by two other young men who claimed not to know him.

The suspect ran when Rawson tried to question him. Rawson hopped in his car and caught up to the minor at the corner.

“You can’t catch me!” he shouted, according to a police report. He ran up the stairs of the East High baseball field, falling three times on the way up. Rawson caught the minor 40 yards later. He admitted to being drunk, then peed and defecated himself as the officer arrested him.

The minor was booked into Metro County Jail on failure to stop at command of a police officer, interfering with arrest, being intoxicated and being a minor with alcohol.
