Summer is for markets, music, being outdoors and community, and no one knows this better than KRCL. Day in the Park brought to you by KRCL is coming to the International Peace Gardens Aug. 23 from noon to 6 p.m. Attendance is free, and the event is in partnership with a plethora of environmental nonprofits, including TreeUtah, Wasatch Food Co-op, Utah Rivers Council, Warm Springs Alliance and Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music.
Day in the Park was a tradition that stretched from the ’90s to the early 2000s, and its mission was to gather the KRCL community and the entire Salt Lake community. The event did not happen for many years, but in 2024 the radio decided to bring it back for their 45th anniversary.
“Last year was kind of our comeback for Day in the Park,” Eric Nelson, KRCL volunteer and facilities manager said. “We learned the ropes again last year and it’s a chance for the KRCL community and the community at large to gather in a beautiful park on the west side of the city.”
With a renewed dedication to the event, Day in the Park is back with even more entertainment, vendors and activities.
The event takes place at the International Peace Gardens, a beautiful historical landmark, located in Jordan Park. The botanic garden was dedicated in 1952, standing as a symbol of peace and understanding between nations.
“It’s a great chance to introduce people to the International Peace Gardens,” Nelson said. “We’ve got a great lineup of music and local artists, and it’s just a chance to meet out in the park and have a wonderful day in the sunshine.”
Music, art, food
The music lineup includes Pepper Rose and The Thorns, Lavender Menaces, Marv Hamilton, Dream Back the Buffalo, Sammy Brue, Lee Rafugee and the Sister Wives Band. Performances stretch the whole event, starting at noon and ending at 6 p.m. Come to the event anytime and be sure to hear music as they have a performer set for each hour.
This year, KRCL is expanding the vendor list, adding a variety of options for attendees.
“We kind of kept it simple last year and we realized that we did have a little bit more space. I think we have a pretty good mix of vendors and we tried to choose a variety of vendors,” Nelson said.
From art to food, some of Salt Lake’s greatest vendors will be in attendance at Day in the Park.
Sarah Lane Jewelry, Chase The Dyes, Paisley Jensen Studios, Caputo’s Market & Deli and Ricky Vigil will be in attendance. Anna Does (Almost) Anything is bringing typewriter poems, caricatures and up-cycled clothing to the event. The School of Rock is setting up an instrument petting zoo and Winks the Clown will make balloon animals. Capture the day with the 360 Photo Booth with SLC Pride. A drawing for a Benno RemiDemi E-Bike, sponsored by Saturday Cycles, will take place so make sure to get involved.
Enjoy food from local vendors Balabe Senegalese Cuisine and Touch of Polynesia. Plus, Al “The Punk Rock Farmer” will have his punk rock produce and Circus Brown’s Frequently Roasted coffee. Red Kiln, Art Haus and Dizzy B Ceramics will display local art and pottery.
