Fashionably late stopped being great

By By Tony Pizza | October 27, 2006
My only wish, once the BoSox were eliminated from the playoffs, was to watch the Yankees' postseason go down in flames. After Detroit sank the Yanks in five I paid homage to the Tigers by watching them steamroll over Oakland the same way Arnold Schwarzenegger mowed over bad guys in "Commando.

Long live the “Queen”

By By Tony Pizza | October 25, 2006
Queens are famous for getting exactly what they want, when they want it. Whether someone is referring to a queen bee, Queen Elizabeth I, the queen of hearts or the queen on a chessboard, it is safe to say that queens rule. So it is fitting that the "Queen" on the U's gymnastic team has also been crowned captain of the Red Rocks for the 2006-2007 season.

He wore short shorts

By By Tony Pizza | October 24, 2006
Growing up, my life revolved around basketball; it even helped dictate who my friends were. At times, basketball was the only thing my friends and I had in common-well, that and the fact that we all had a favorite player whose signature moves we would spend hours trying to master.

Utes win season’s first water fight

By By Tony Pizza | October 23, 2006
The 2006-07 swim season began Saturday at the Ute Natatorium, and things could not have gone better for the Utes. Both the men and women dominated their portions of the meet in convincing fashion, as the U men out-swam their Denver Pioneer counterparts by a 188-95 margin.

Swimming season kicks off in Provo

By By Tony Pizza | October 20, 2006
The U swimming team is officially back in the pool as it kicked the new season off at the Beehive Relays in Provo Thursday night. Although it is just a warm-up, the meet gives both BYU and Utah a chance to get the season started with a "friendly" competition.

Double trouble

By By Tony Pizza | October 19, 2006
Rodney Dangerfield may have coined the phrase "I don't get no respect," but football kickers should have no problem adopting that phrase. Even though kickers take up every one of the top 20 all-time NFL scoring seats, many aren't taken seriously because they don't typically tackle or get tackled.

Smells like chlorine spirit

By By Tony Pizza and By Tony Pizza | October 18, 2006
Many students who have walked around the HPER complex lately have probably noticed the intensifying smell of chlorine wafting through the air. In October, the smell of chlorine around the Ute Natatorium can mean only one thing-it's time to break out the U swimsuits because the swimming season has arrived once again.

Three proposed Man Laws

By By Tony Pizza and By Tony Pizza | October 16, 2006
First off, ladies, if you don't like the title of this column, take it up with Miller Lite, because I didn't come up with the concept of Man Laws. I am just following the idea. Now, here are three Man Laws that relate to sports that I would like to see addressed at the next meeting.

The one that got away

By By Tony Pizza and By Tony Pizza | October 16, 2006
Real Salt Lake had hopes that its season finale against Chivas USA would be its chance to clinch the first playoff spot in the franchise's brief existence. Instead, an RSL team with little to play for settled for a 1-1 draw. The team found out before Sunday's game even started that it wouldn't matter either way.

Casteel-ing the spot light

By By Tony Pizza and By Tony Pizza | October 13, 2006
If the U football team had control of Webster's dictionary, it would give some serious thought to putting Brent Casteel's picture next to the word "dynamic." Not only is the sophomore wide receiver's role on the offense-the one that changes from running back to wide receiver-a dynamic one, but the burst of positive energy Casteel provides for the offense makes him the epitome of the word.
