By By Tony Pizza | September 22, 2006
When Real Salt Lake goes to Dallas for a rematch of last Saturday's game in Rice-Eccles Stadium, RSL will hope to repeat the three-point result. Fans and players alike just hope that RSL doesn't have to take the same route to get there. RSL will try to feed off the emotion of its most impressive comeback victory in team history.

Guys, hide this column

Since most women don't know a thing about football, now would be a good time for any of them to stop reading. Just about the closest a woman has come to speaking intelligently about football was when that cute girl from the local newspaper commercials "acted" like she knew what a 3-4 package was.

Royal gut check

It may be decades before Real Salt Lake gets a win like the one it earned on Saturday night. In a game deemed by most to be a sure loss, RSL got its biggest gut-check of the year, miraculously beating FC Dallas 3-2 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The game started with RSL at a slight disadvantage, as it would be without the services of the league's top goal scorer, Jeff Cunningham.

Although the in-state rivalry between the Utah Utes and the Utah State Aggies does not have the intensity of the U/BYU rivalry, the annual U/USU football game is the state of Utah's longest-running rivalry. Since 1892, the Utah-Utah State football game has been played 105 times.

Five years is all the time typical U students get to paint themselves red, scream at referees and show their school spirit before they find a mate, a nine-to-five job and two kids under the age of 2.

Operation shutdown

Northern Arizona has 11 players out for every offensive play, but the Utes knew they needed to give the bulk of their attention to just one of those players to keep the Lumberjacks from repeating the scare they were able to give No. 23 Arizona State the week before.

Stalemate in D.C.

By By Tony Pizza | September 11, 2006
RSL turned in a David Blaine-like performance Saturday night, escaping from the nation's capital with a 1-1 tie against D.C. United. D.C. United has been the stingiest home team this season, as they have allowed a mere six points to slip out of RFK stadium.

Bringing down the haus

It took freshman Daria Bijak (pronounced Bee-Jawk) all of about 10 days to make her first statement as a member of the Utah Gymnastics squad. Just a week-and-a-half after the German native made a 24-hour trip to Salt Lake City for the start of classes, Bijak returned home to successfully defend her German all-around championship and also win the uneven bars championship in Stuttgart, Germany, over Labor Day weekend.

Road work ahead

Real Salt Lake travels to the nation's capital this weekend for its last East Coast trip this regular season. With only six games left and four points separating RSL from the second-place Houston Dynamos, RSL will need to get points any way it can. Obviously, RSL is looking for a win in every one of its matches, but salvaging a tie against D.
