Key returner: QB Kevin O’Connell, senior
After being injured for most of the 2006 season, Aztec fans hope O’Connell can stay healthy. It is safe to say that if he can, he’ll be able to help boost the Aztecs’ 14.2 points-per-game average. At 6-foot-6 and 225 lbs., his frame gives him the opportunity to be the difference-maker.
Key loss: CB Terrell Maze
A defense that is already bad enough got worse after losing defensive back Terrell Maze. His solid secondary play kept passing offenses honest. The Aztecs will be filling the void left by him with sophomore Aaron Moore.
X-factor: RB Lynell Hamilton, senior
Hamilton is an explosive running back. If he can rebound from a disappointing 2006 (even before he got hurt), he has the speed and athleticism to make an impact. It is going to be important for the Aztecs to utilize him early and often. His durability is a question mark. However, if he stays healthy he could help the Aztecs post some impressive offensive numbers.
Toughest game: at Arizona State, Sept. 15
In the valley of the sun there is rejuvenation after the firing of Dirk Koetter. With a new head coach, the Sun Devils will be ready to play. Sun Devil Stadium will be a far cry from the half-empty Qaulcomm Stadium the Aztecs call home.
Cupcake game: vs. Portland State, Sept. 22
A week after playing in a zoo-like atmosphere in Tempe, Ariz., the Aztecs should come home to a nice win over an overmatched Portland State team. This game should give Chuck Long his fourth win in his coaching tenure at San Diego State.
Season outlook:
The Aztecs were battered in 2006. Injuries kept them from posing any kind of consistent threat. Staying healthy should be a priority for the Aztecs. Wins have never come easy to San Diego State and 2007 should not be any different. A record of 3-9 or 4-8 is a real possibility.
