Left hand turn signal proposed for N. Campus Drive

By Isabella Bravo, Staff Writer

To mitigate added congestion from the closure of Federal Way, the Utah Department of Transportation might install a left-turn signal at the intersection of North Campus Drive and Central Campus Drive.

Federal Way, a short stretch of road that divided the former U golf course, closed March 23 to make way for construction of the Utah Science Technology and Research Initiative complex. The closure of Federal Way has rerouted traffic to North Campus Drive, said Tom Christensen, program manager for USTAR.

Lisa Baird, UDOT traffic engineer for the area, said that shortly after the Federal Way closure, the U requested that UDOT install a left-turn signal for westbound traffic on North Campus turning left to head south on Central Campus.

UDOT still needs to document the traffic flow in all directions at the intersection, before it can install a signal.

“Putting in the signal takes time away from the other movement,” Baird said. “We need to make sure the turning volume is high enough to justify taking away time from them.”

Baird said the study division for UDOT manages the studies for the entire state, and consequently the list of requests for studies is long. Baird said once the study begins, it will take approximately six to eight weeks to finish.
