At the Capitol: Senate approves college funding package

The Senate passed a bill Feb. 6 approving more than $20 million in ongoing funding for all state colleges and universities. The money would be used to improve student retention and graduation rates, advance math and science fields, improve faculty quality, promote regional economic development and fund other priorities as set forth by the institution.

Senate passes bill to conceal animal researchers

The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would conceal the names, personal addresses and phone numbers of animal researchers at state colleges and universities. SB 113, sponsored by Sen. Greg Bell, R-Fruit Heights, would modify the Government Records Access and Management Act to classify personal information of researchers who conduct medical or scientific research on animals at institutions of higher education as protected documents.

New bill would cut tuition discount for illegals

The Utah Senate introduced a 20-page immigration reform bill Jan. 31, combining proposals from several pieces of legislation already moving through the House and Senate. Senate Bill 81, sponsored by Sen. Bill Hickman, R-Washington County, would repeal in-state tuition for undocumented college students who register after April 30, 2010.

Bill would conceal names of animal researchers

Animal rights protesters are up in arms over a bill set to hit the Senate floor in the legislature next week that would conceal the names, personal addresses and phone numbers of animal researchers at state colleges and universities. Harold Rose, an activist with Utah Primate Freedom, said the bill is unconstitutional and undermines basic principles of democracy.

Year in review: FUSE triumphs in ASUU elections

March 15 The FUSE Party dominated the Associated Students of the University of Utah elections, sweeping all executive and most legislative positions. FUSE presidential candidate Spencer Pearson and vice presidential candidate Basim Motiwala beat Forward Party candidates Rick Pehrson and Clayton McDonald by 526 votes, receiving 54 percent of the vote.

Year in review: Campus security task force named

June 5 U President Michael Young organized a campus security task force in response to April's shootings at Virginia Tech University and the Utah Supreme Court's decision to overturn the university's previous no-gun policy. The task force is still looking into three core aspects of emergency response: how to deal with troubling behavioral issues in students and faculty, what to do in the presence of weapons and feasible ways to notify the entire campus of a crisis.

KUTE back on the air

KUTE, the U's student-run radio station, may be back on the air in 2008 if plans to put an antenna on the roof of the Languages and Communication Building are completed over Winter Break. The Student Broadcast Council recently voted that up to $1,000 of KUTE's reserve funds can be used to install the antenna.
