Students at the U have an interesting world at their fingertips. If one were sitting in the Union, within 20 minutes that person could be at the center of a bustling city or entering the Rocky Mountains. U students might not have the Las Vegas strip or Hollywood Boulevard at their fingertips, but they do have a plethora of ways to enjoy the outdoors at their disposal.

Playing with house money

My grandma is one of the last people in Utah most people would guess is a diehard Jazz fan. She barely tops out at five feet and she might weigh 100 pounds if she wears a large cowbell around her neck. She's the prototypical grandma you'd find frequenting any yarn or craft store, but if the Jazz are on TV she's nailed to the edge of her seat watching the game with an intense devotion that would make any beer-bellied Bears fan stare in awe.

Five U track athletes are headed to Eugene, Ore., for the track and field West Regional being held May 24 to 26. The Mountain West Conference heptathlon champion Amanda Feigt will represent Utah in the 400-meter hurdles and the long jump. Joining Feigt in the hurdles will be Chelsea Shapard.

Jazz advance to the Western Conference Finals for the first time since 1998

When the Utah Jazz traded for Derek Fisher last July, the team knew it was adding a playoff-tested veteran to its roster. The windfall of that trade continued to pay big dividends for the Jazz on Tuesday night. It may not have been the prettiest game in team history, but the Jazz guaranteed themselves at least four more games in the 2007 NBA Playoffs.

Jim Boylen has been the Runnin' Utes' head coach for a little over a month. Already he is sending an important message to his players. Boylen excused freshman Daniel Deane from the U men's basketball team Tuesday after Deane failed to reach the scholastic expectations his new head coach implemented.

Red Rocks end the season with a bang at Nationals

By By Tony Pizza May 14, 2007
After a forgettable 2007 regular season that exacerbated the Red Rocks' fears of not participating in the national championships they were hosting, the Utes ended the season with a memorable run at capturing an 11th NCAA Championship. In the end, the Utes were denied the opportunity for a rousing celebration in front of their home fans and had to settle for second place as the Georgia Gym Dogs put together an inspired effort for the school's third-straight national title.

Painting the town red

Toward the end of the season, anybody who mentioned the year 1999 around a U gymnast ran the risk of getting slapped -- at least until April 14. It was then that the Red Rocks' fears of not qualifying for the National Championships they were hosting were finally extinguished.

Gator aid

The University of Florida has had an interesting string of success on the national level as of late. The school's basketball team has won back-to-back national titles and the football team has also joined in on the fun as it captured a NCAA National Championship of its own in January.
