ASUU’s Assembly was running out of money in its contingency fund, so it allocated $50,000 from the general reserve at a meeting Tuesday night in two $25,000 bills.
The bills will now have to pass through the ASUU Senate on Feb. 27 for the transfer to be officially approved. The Assembly can only allocate up to $25,000 from the general reserve at a time, which is why they had to pass two separate bills.
“We need to have these two transfers to cover the bills for March and April,” said Sana Muller, ASUU’s legislative advisor.
The Assembly also voted to approve funding to transfer $4,500 from the general reserve to ASUU’s Academic Affairs board to fund Spring Semester’s Geek Week, which takes place the last week of the semester. ASUU works with the Marriott Library, the Union Programming Council, student success advocates and other organizations on campus to give students a chance to de-stress and recharge during finals week. The joint bill will also be presented to ASUU’s Senate on Feb. 27.
The Assembly also voted to allocate $4,493 to the Asian American Student Association to reimburse the cost of their Asian American High School Conference, which is designed to help Asian Americans prepare for college. The conference was held on Feb. 21 in the Union.
“When you break down the demographics, you see a lot of student groups, but you don’t see the whole Asian American population,” said Rep. Emilio Manuel Camu of the College of Humanities.
This bill will also face the Senate on Feb. 27.
The men’s water polo club received funding from the Assembly on three separate bills to reimburse the club for costs of pool rental, equipment costs and apparel costs. The total cost of all three bills was more than $4,600.
The Assembly allocated more than $4,000 to the Homeless Outreach Interest Group to organize the 14th annual Fourth Street Clinic Triathlon. The triathlon is a fundraiser to help the Fourth Street Clinic provide free health care to the homeless and uninsured in Salt Lake City.
