For the second week in a row, the No. 12 University of Utah football team (6-1, 3-1 Pac-12) will play at home. The Utes are set to take on Cal (4-3, 1-3 Pac-12) in this year’s Blackout game. This year’s game will also be the annual Ute Proud game.

Scouting Utah

The Utes are coming off a dominant win over southern foe Arizona State 21-3. Quarterback Tyler Huntley was 12-19 for 171 yards in the victory. He also threw his first interception of the season in the victory.

Zack Moss led the team in both rushing and receiving yards in the win. He rushed for 99 yards on 25 attempts and 2 touchdowns. In the pass game he was targeted 3 times for 78 yards. Moss’ longest reception was for 46 yards, but he fumbled the ball. Brant Kuithe led the charge for the Utah receivers with 29 yards. Jaylen Dixon scored the other Utah touchdown on a jet sweep.

The Utah defense played lights out, only allowing the Sun Devils’ offense to 136 total yards. Bradlee Anae had 3 sacks on the night. Anae was not only named the conference defensive player and defensive linemen of the week, but he was also named the Chuck Bednarik Award Player of the Week.

Rushing Record Watch

Zack Moss took down a 31-year old record last week when he broke off a 32-yard rush against Arizona State. With that rush, Moss now has 3,264 total yards in his career at Utah. While that record has fallen, Moss is on track to beat two more records before the season is over.

Moss was 1 yard short of 100 yards last week. With one more 100-yard rushing game, Moss will break the three-way tie for first place with Devontae Booker and John White for most 100 yard rushing games. Right now all three rushers have had 14 of these games.

Moss also needs two rushing touchdowns to break the record of 31 rushing touchdowns in their Utah career held by Del Rodgers. This record has been standing since 1981.

Scouting Cal

Cal is coming off a disappointing loss against Oregon State 21-17. Before going down with an injury, quarterback Devon Modster was 12-27 for 151 yards and 1 touchdown.

In the rush game, Christopher Brown Jr. rushed for 49 yards and 1 touchdown. Nikko Remigio lead the team in receiving yards with 4 receptions for 51 yards.

On the defensive side, the team is lead by Evan Weaver, who had 11 total tackles, 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss in the game.

Mascot Report

While usually a bear mascot is one of the better choices a team can make, Cal’s mascot Oski is something of nightmares. Not only does he look like he came straight out of the ’70s but sometimes he does this weird pose and it just creeps me out.

Our digital managing editor Josh Petersen said Oski looks like an “uncanny valley Scooby Doo,” and I second that.

Swoop wins this battle hands down.

How to Watch

The game is set to kick off at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 with Tim Brando, Spencer Tillman and Coley Harvey on the call. Fans can also listen to the game on the Home of the Utes ESPN 700 with Bill Riley, Scott Mitchell and Tom Hackett on the call.
