Have you ever wondered how a live theater production of “The Rocky Horror Show” would fare for a Utah audience? Well, as it turns out, surprisingly well!

Adapted for the stage from the cult classic film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” the show follows two newly engaged squares named Brad and Janet after their car breaks down in the rain. They find themselves in a castle and eventually in the company of Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his strange friends. Prepare for a night of campy fun. Fishnets and corsets are not required.

Let’s Do The Time Warp Again!

As you enter the main theater and await the start of the show, the quality of the stage and set design is fully apparent. An eye-popping “Rocky Horror Show” title card adorns the center and sets the mood. While waiting, you may find yourself rummaging through a bag of props that can be bought at the concession stand. The bag contains a fake hotdog, a glow stick, some playing cards, a party blower, a rubber glove, some toilet paper, a newspaper and some bubbles. Best of all, it only costs $5.

“Rocky Horror Show” virgins can expect a wildly fun time as the show starts. Crack a glow stick beforehand and open your bubbles to be prepared. Closely pay attention to The Narrator on stage throughout the show for the ultimate immersive experience.

Rock and Roll Glam

Pioneer Theatre’s production of “The Rocky Horror Show” is brimming with talent and charisma. Both new and old fans will undoubtedly enjoy it from beginning to end. From the opening number, the live singing is amazing. The accompanying live music from the band on stage is also wonderful. The set pieces and backdrops really add an immersive feeling to every single performance and will not want to be missed.

Every performance is top-notch. Some of the biggest standouts come from Janet (Alanna Saunders), Columbia (Micki Martinez) and of course, Frank-N-Furter (Jeremiah James). The costumes are full of style and campy flair you will surely be grinning ear to ear. I did think that Frank-N-Furter could have used some heavier and more pronounced makeup that makes the character so iconic. For some reason, it looked like he had barely any!

The ending is extremely fun and playful. The actors use bubble guns and flashing stage lights for their ray blasters. The corsets and fishnets are off the charts for the entire cast. It is worth noting, if it wasn’t obvious already, that this show is definitely not for kids!

Look forward to doing the Time Warp yourself at the end. Above all, enjoy yourself! The entire show and the added prop bags really make this show a must-watch.
