Swoop, the red-tailed hawk, a bird native to Utah, has proudly represented the University of Utah since 1996.
While best known for his infectious spirit at athletic events, Swoop shines as a star both on and off the football field.
A mascot with a mission
Due to growing concerns over the use of Ute imagery in previous mascots, Swoop emerged in 1996 as the U’s official mascot, bringing forth a new era for the university.
“One autumn day, Swoop found his people,” Swoop’s official U of U website states. “He made all feel welcome, and his contagious energy streamed into the hearts of everyone around, even causing smiles to form on the faces of visiting teams.”
Along with being a fan favorite at football games and other sporting events, Swoop actively participates in campus academic life. He witnesses firsthand the groundbreaking research and innovation of both students and faculty.
“The true spirit of the Utes resided in athletic sportsmanship, but just as strongly in the relentless pursuit of knowledge and excellence,” the website states.
Extending beyond the on-campus community, Swoop now has his own kids’ club, which is the ultimate fan experience for the youngest of U of U supporters. Members of this club enjoy exclusive merchandise, VIP events and other special benefits.
What Swoop offers
More than just the face of the University, Swoop supports students, faculty and the Utah community as a whole in many different ways.
Walking down the aisle soon? Trying to find someone to officiate a wedding? If there’s not a trusted relative in the picture, the U has someone who can officiate the wedding with style. Swoop is an ordained minister, legally allowed to perform wedding ceremonies.
No words will come from Swoop himself, seeing that he’s a very quiet bird; however, his personality is sure to make the ceremony memorable.
Turning one year older? Want a certain red-tailed hawk to help you celebrate? Swoop celebrates birthday parties as well. Again, don’t expect him to sing along, but he can definitely entertain party guests.
Need a ribbon cutter for a business opening? Want a somewhat famous college mascot in attendance? Swoop is the man for the job. He can also be hired to appear and endorse business openings and other functions of the sort.
There are certain stunts and tricks that Swoop can perform, too, depending on the event and the asker’s needs. Kody Carbone, Chief Experience Manager of the Auxiliary Business Department at the U, discusses the school’s initiative to increase Swoop’s off-campus involvement.
“A big goal of ours is to get Swoop out into the community,” Carbone said. “Everyone loves Swoop, and when you see him interact with a student, faculty member or a fan, it brightens their day. Why not have more of that positive energy on campus and out in the community?”
Make your next event soar
Swoop’s new and improved website explains that he’s more than just a spirited bird on the football field — he’s a University of Utah figurehead aiming to be involved across campus and throughout the entire U community.
The Auxiliary Business Department established an official booking process for Swoop, making it easy to invite him to a wide range of events and activities.
“As time progressed, Swoop became more than a mascot,” the website states. “He became the embodiment of unity and pride — a perfect symbol for others to remember what is truly important.”
