The University of Utah’s Department of Public Safety maintains a daily crime and fire log that documents reported offenses, locations and whether cases remain open or have been resolved. The log is intended to keep the campus community informed in real time, providing details about individual incidents rather than compiling data solely in annual statistics.
Simple and aggravated assaults are defined in The Daily Utah Chronicle’s September 2024 Crime Report. The report also clarifies other common terms, including “criminal mischief” and “disorderly conduct.”
Crimes categorized as “other” can include a range of incidents, such as warrant services, a definition detailed in the November and December 2024 Crime Report.
Agency assist, along with welfare checks, is defined in the January and February 2025 Crime Report.
Most common crimes

Between June 13 and Aug. 12, 2025, a total of 510 crimes were reported. The most common offenses were traffic accidents, with 62 reports making up 12% of total incidents.
Suspicious circumstances followed with 49 cases. As defined by Brown University, suspicious circumstances involve events where there is no direct evidence of a crime, but enough signs to suggest that one may have occurred.
Assault against healthcare workers were the third most common category, with 40 incidents reported during the three months.
In the “other” category, some of the summer months’ most common entries included agency assists, unintentional harm against a healthcare worker, community-oriented policing and non-criminal civil complaints.
Most common locations

Following a trend noted in previous crime reports, the majority of summer incidents occurred on the Health Campus, which encompasses University Hospital, Primary Children’s Hospital and the Huntsman Cancer Institute. This area accounted for 301 of the total 510 reports.
Main Campus recorded 100 incidents, while Lower Campus saw no reported crimes during the same period.
Case statuses

Of the 510 crimes reported, 376 cases have been closed and are no longer under investigation. Fourteen cases were cleared through adult arrests. Sixty-one incidents remain under active investigation, and 59 were categorized under other dispositions as outlined in the crime log.
Trends and comparisons
According to data published in the March edition of the Crime Report, crimes occurring on the Health Campus have increased from 46.7% to 59% of all campus crimes. The increase in violence against healthcare workers mirrors a local and national trend; although the summer data covers three months compared to the March report’s one-month period, the rise reflects a continued concentration of incidents in the healthcare setting.
Reports of sexual battery, domestic violence and rape remained consistent with earlier findings, with seven incidents reported over the summer compared to six in March.
