Editor:
I would like to personally thank Chris Yeates for sharing his delightfully entertaining expose on the injustice he has encountered at the whim of his cat in The Daily Utah Chronicle on Sept. 28.
I do hope, however, that he was concerned enough to wonder why the kitty needed to expel its dinner. Having been the companion to many cats, I have found that they tend to purge themselves on your person as a method of communication.
I would suggest that Chris become more observant. This new-found ability could then be used in other areas to improve the overall quality of his life. Say, for instance, that “absurd diversity requirement?[that] can be fulfilled for the most part only through the women’s studies program.”
At last count there were approximately 121 classes available in 31 different programs that fulfill the diversity requirement. These include programs such as English, Exercise and Sport Science, Foods and Nutrition, Linguistics, Music and Theater. Only 25 percent of the classes offered incorporate or deal specifically with gender issues.
The purpose of all the diversity classes is to open your eyes a bit, to allow you to see things from a new perspective that is a part of our American society.
I am saddened that Chris chose to personalize and internalize the issues discussed in his sociology of gender class. I am also disappointed that instead of actively trying to work towards building a better understanding and working to discover “how the two sexes interact and why they can’t understand one another,” he resorted to callous, stereotypical name calling.
