Following a last-place finish in a field of 16, nine days ago, Utah golf coach Wayne Fisher will switch up his team?s lineup for the Countrywide Invitational in Simi Valley, Calif.
Fisher will plug in freshman Nick Micek to go along with regulars Nick Summers, Luke Swilor, Paul Winterowd and Bruce Summerhays at the invitational, which starts today and runs through Tuesday.
Micek recently performed well at a trial tournament in St. George, but the substitution was done to ?get a feel for where some of the freshmen are,? Fisher said.
Micek will try to equal the success of fellow freshman Ashdon Woods.
In Woods? first collegiate round Oct. 5, he fired an even par 72 en route to a team best +11 finish. Now, Micek gets a turn in his first collegiate meet.
But the elite golfers still need to contribute. ?We need to get our top two players to where they should be,? said Fisher. ?Luke [Swilor] and Paul [Winterowd] haven?t played to what they?re capable of.?
A team effort should raise the Utes in the standings. ?The opponents won?t be as strong as our previous [tournaments], so we are looking at this event as a confidence builder,? said Fisher, who expects to finish in the top 10. ?We need to get our games up to the level to where I know they can be.?
