The Utah soccer record of 38 career goals was supposed to stand for a long time, it was supposed to be untouchable.
Yet, with her fifth goal of the season and 39th of her career, against UNLV last Saturday night, Amy Kofoed broke Staci Burt?s career scoring record at the University of Utah.
Kofoed has started all four years she has been at Utah and has been the Utes? go-to player in the front field for several years now.
?We?re all proud of Amy, and we?re very happy for her,? said U coach Amy Winslow. ?That?s a tough feat to be able to do that.?
Kofoed didn?t even realize she had broken the record until halftime of the game. ?I didn?t even think about it when it happened,? she said. She is excited to get the record, but is happy and relieved to be done with it.
?I?m just glad it?s over,? she said. ?It?s done and out of the way, and now we can just focus on winning conference games.
?I?m very unhappy that we?re 0-2 [in conference play] right now,? Kofoed said.
Kofoed and the Utes are happy to be home to play at Ute Field. They will get three straight home games against New Mexico, Wyoming and Air Force.
?We?re just two different teams at home and on the road,? Kofoed said, speaking of the unsuccessful road trip. ?We just need to learn how to play on the road better.?
Staci Burt, the former record holder, now plays for the Women?s United Soccer Association?s Carolina Courage. Burt graduated from Utah just two years ago.
It may be called bittersweet that the goal came in a loss and on the road, but Kofoed has been looking forward to this accomplishment for a few games.
?It stinks to lose, period? she said, when asked if it hurt to lose when she broke the record.
However, Kofoed has stated several times that her key goal is to win, not to break scoring records.
Kofoed will be the first Ute ever to score 40 goals in her career, and may be the only Ute for quite a while to accomplish that feat.
Now, with records behind her, Kofoed can focus on scoring on defenses and keeping the Utes alive for a postseason bid?their ultimate goal.
