Thanks to the Olympic Winter Games, Salt Lake City will have more ?cool space? in the future.
Saturday, the Bennion Community Service Center will plant 100 trees donated by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, at the Bend-in the-River Urban Tree House and Green Space.
As part of its campaign to minimize the environmental impact of the games, SLOC initiated a program to promote urban forestry and selected the Bend-in-the-River project as one of its beneficiaries.
Sonja Hervi, the project coordinator, is asking for volunteers to help plant the trees. There is no age or skill requirement, and the project will provide the tools and gloves.
?Participants should wear work clothes,? Hervi said. ?We’ll provide the rest.”
Hervi expects 50 to 100 volunteers, about half from the University of Utah community. A free breakfast is served at 8 a.m., then the planting lasts from 9 a.m. until noon.
The project has selected trees native to the Jordan River flood plain. These include poplars, sumacs and elderberries.
The Bend-in-the-River, a 2 acre natural green space along the Jordan River, is located at 1030 W. Fremont Avenue (1100 South). The Bennion Center, along with a number of community groups, maintains the site, which was founded in 1996 as part of the Bennion Center’s 10th anniversary celebration. The Michael Foundation and various sources fund the project.
