The Mountain West Conference is heating up. All seven conference teams are within reach of both the regular season title and the No. 1-seed in the MWC Championship. League leaders clash in a very important week.
Utah
The Utes got back to their winning ways, shutting out New Mexico 2-0 last Sunday at Ute Field. That win gives them their first conference win of the season.
Utah is 5-0 at home and has outscored opponents 17-1 at Ute Field.
Shauna Gurr-Bingham, with her two goals Sunday, is tied for Utah?s goal lead with Amy Kofoed, at five goals. Lynnsey Asay recorded her fourth shutout of the season at goalkeeper.
Air Force
The Falcons have come on strong in conference play. Last week, they defeated UNLV 3-2, and San Diego State 2-0.
Falcon freshman Jennifer Rowland was named the MWC Player of the Week for the second time this season. She scored two goals to help propel Air Force past UNLV and SDSU.
The Falcons have a big matchup this week at BYU, before heading to Salt Lake City for another big game against Utah.
BYU
The Cougars? loss to New Mexico was the first BYU loss to a conference opponent in 13 games. It is also the first time in three years the Cougars have been beaten at home by a conference opponent.
The Cougars will face Air Force on Thursday night, before facing Wyoming on Saturday night.
New Mexico
New Mexico is a half-game out of first place in the conference and will be at home for this week?s games against UNLV and San Diego State.
Senior goalkeeper Shelly Hammock leads the conference with 5.53 saves per game and a total of 83.
San Diego State
Sophomore Kim Castellanos leads the MWC in scoring, with 10 goals and 22 points.
UNLV
The Rebels are the only MWC team that has not been shut out this year.
The Rebels split last week?s games, losing to Air Force 3-2, then defeating Wyoming 3-2 in overtime on Sunday.
Wyoming
The Cowgirls? tie against SDSU sets a school record for most ties in a season, with three. The Cowgirls have yet to win an overtime game (0-2 3), and five of their 13 matches have seen the overtime period. Six of Wyoming?s eight losses have been by one goal.
