Music, dancers and ghosts floated through the Union Friday night at the Black Pumpkin Affair.
The affair, hosted by Union Programs, started at 8 p.m. and lasted until 2 a.m. About 500 students attended.
“This is the biggest event the Union Board hosts,” said Danny Schoenfeld, programs chair. “Things are going well this year.”
The event was a fundraiser and food drive for the Utah Food Bank. They raised $2,000, as well as “three or four big boxes” of food, Schoenfeld said.
“We donated the proceeds to the Utah Food Bank last year, and this year we wanted a local charity. The food bank is hurting right now,” he said.
Although the Union Board organized the affair, many student organizations sponsored individual events.
The Latter-day Saints Student Association hosted a dance in the Union Ballroom.
The Union administration offered free bowling, billiards and arcade games.
The Residence Halls Association hosted casino games.
Student Health Services passed out packets of flavored condoms and lubricant.
Live DJs played techno music in the Crimson Underground.
“Cooperation has been really good [among the student groups]” Schoenfeld said.
Student Dan Palmer enjoyed himself.
“It was a good time. There was a fun atmosphere, they had good games. The poker and contests were fun,” he said.
However, not everyone was completely pleased with the event. U student Richard Hy presented a magic show, but he was disappointed in the turnout.
“People just didn’t show up,” he said. “It’s not the organizers fault, but I wish more people would have come.”
