On Saturday, the Alumni Association and other groups sponsored a high school leadership conference.
About 100 high school student-body officers from 22 high schools in Salt Lake City and the surrounding area attended to learn leadership skills from the student leaders of the Associated Students of the University of Utah.
One of the hands-on activities was an arm wrestle with the goal of both wrestlers winning as many times as possible.
Many students strained against each other and did not work together. If the students had worked together, each could have won many times, and the pair could win the game.
U student leaders conducted workshops in a group discussion form, emphasizing interaction and hands-on learning.
“Hopefully, they learned to communicate with one another more,” said Spencer Snow, who supervised a small group. “It was a short time, but I think they learned a lot.”
Addie Edwards, an officer from Davis High School said she enjoyed the conference and what she learned there.
“I just learned how to communicate better,” she said. “It helps with what goes on in my school.”
The U students who helped with the conference also feel their time was well-spent.
“I learned a lot,” said Will Smith, another group leader. “It was good to have a nice reminder of the basics of communication.”
Although the main purpose of the conference was not recruiting high school students, the organizers had that in mind.
The high school students who attended the conference received information about the U.
Morgan Boyack, an admissions counselor said the participants of the conference will receive a follow up e-mail inviting them to take a tour of the campus which will be led when the major recruiting will take place.
