The men’s swimming and diving team scored its first win of the season Friday night against Pacific, by a score of 147.5 to 80.5. The women’s team fell to Pacific, 127-94, but then downed San Diego State Saturday afternoon, 166-120.
For the men, freshman Cody Rempfer had first-place finishes in the 400-meter individual medley and 100-meter butterfly, while Jonathan Hanna won the 1,000 meter freestyle with a time of nine minutes, 56.12 seconds, Evan Castro won the 200-meter and 500-meter freestyle races, and David Johnson finished first in the 100-meter backstroke, at 53.41 seconds.
The win puts the Ute men at 1-2 on the season. They have nearly a month off before heading to Colorado Springs, Colo., for the Holiday Training Camp in mid December.
The women weren’t as fortunate against Pacific, but still had some success. Loren Sweny took first place in the 1,000-meter freestyle at 10:40.44 seconds, and also had a second-place finish in the 500 meter freestyle. Neringa Statkeviciute finished first in the 100-meter freestyle at 51.61 seconds, and second in the 200 meter freestyle. Melissa Chamberlin won the 200-meter breaststroke race in 2:23.57. Freshman Kerri Fiori won the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
Against San Diego State, however, the Ute women were able to get a big victory against the conference foe.
They are now 2-3 on the season, and 2-2 in the conference.
Statkeviciute finished first in three separate events?the 200 meter freestyle, 50-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle.
Sweny, Chamberlin, Kristen Kaiser and Courtney McKinney also each had first-place finishes for the Utes, while Fiori won the one-meter and three-meter diving events again.
