The Utah women’s basketball team opened its home slate in impressive fashion Tuesday night, cruising to a 32-point halftime lead over Albertson College of Idaho before dismantling the Coyotes by a final score of 93-45.
The win boosted the Utes to 2-1 overall, while Albertson fell to 2-2 on the year.
Senior shooting guard Erin Gibbons led four U players in double-figures, knocking down 7-11 shots to finish with a game-high 21 points in just 23 minutes of play. Senior center Lauren Beckman went 7-8 from the field and added her third straight double-double, totaling 14 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore point Kelsy Stireman contributed 11 points and 9 dishes and senior forward Katherine McColl notched 10 points.
The Utes wound up shooting 57.4 percent from the field and limited the ‘Yotes to just 29 percent.
Coach Elaine Elliott was pleased with the progress her team is making.
“We still have areas that we need to work on,” Elliott said. “Tonight was a better effort on our part, and we are starting to make improvements. We played more disciplined defensively and we have a lot of newcomers that are still making adjustments. It is a new team this year and we have to learn to relax a little and have fun.”
