Editor:
This is a letter in opposition of Matt Canham’s Nov. 16 article “Corky Humps the Y” and also a response to Adam Blundell’s Nov. 27 letter to the editor, “Fueling the State’s Traditional Feud.”
First, the article was disgusting. For that reason alone it should not have been published. This is an institution of higher learning, and anything with a title of “Corky Humps the Y” is not only distasteful, but also offensive.
Second, it did fan the flame of blind hatred between the Y and the U, as pointed out by the previous responses. The keyword here is blind hatred, an ignorant hatred. I found it funny that Adam used this word to describe the people who found this type of thing repulsive.
In all actuality, I find the same relentless hatred as spawned by such articles incredibly closed-minded and ignorant. Even if someone should hate another for whatever reason they have, they should at least present their cause in an intelligent way which helps convey their point of view. Canham failed most miserably in that regard.
Finally, everywhere at the U, I see signs promoting peace and respect for all people, i.e. the one signed by our president to stop the discrimination and hatred posted right after Sept. 11. This means everybody, not just for a select few. That article really did not achieve that goal.
So, for anyone of these reasons, that article should not have been published. I, as a student at the U, strongly discourage Canham or any other writer to write as such in the future. We need unity at the U, and we don’t get unity by openly mocking values and beliefs of a group of people here.
