The Utah swim and baseball teams have bolstered their respective rosters by adding four recruits apiece. The swimmers will not join the Utes until the 2002-03 season, while the hardballers are expected to be on next year’s roster.
In the pool, the Utes get:
?Amy Barefield from Bozeman, Mont., who was a finalist in the 50 and 100 free at the 2001 Speedo Northwest Sectional Championship and named to the Montana All-State Team for the 50, 100 and 200 free.
?Meghan Fleisch from Salt Lake City, who swam for Brighton High School and was a state finalist in the 200 and 500 free.
?Tanner Folster from Mapleton, Utah, who swam for Springville High School and was the 2000-01 Utah state high school champion in the 100 free, as well as the 2001 Utah Sprint Swimmer of the Year.
?Jonathan Larsen from Stockton, Calif., a finalist in the Speedo West competition in the 50 and 100 free.
Meanwhile, on the diamond, the U has added two pitchers and two outfielders:
?Matt Anderson, a Sandy, Utah, native, played outfield for Jordan High, and was called “by far the best high school outfielder in the state of Utah this season” by U coach Tim Esmay.
?Nathan Shierholtz, who hails from San Ramon Valley High in Danville, Calif., is a lefty outfielder who can switch to the infield corner positions.
?Brandon Bailey, from Fort Collins, Colo., is a righty hurler with an upper-80s fastball and a strong breaking ball.
?Derek Larsen, another righty, from Spanish Fork, Utah, was called the “best right hander in Utah on the mound” by Esmay.
