SALT LAKE CITY?Two advocacy groups have ranked Salt Lake City as the fourth “meanest city” to the homeless, based on ordinances against such things as public sleeping or camping.
The National Coalition for the Homeless and the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty claim that the homeless are finding their civil rights increasingly threatened by such ordinances.
According to the report, nearly 80 percent of the 80 cities surveyed have some sort of ordinance that prohibits sleeping or camping in public areas, but nearly all of the cities lack enough shelter space to meet demand.
Mayor Rocky Anderson was dumbfounded by the ranking.
