Editor:
I had hoped last year would be the end of the debate on allowing legally carried weapons on campus. Especially after recent terrorist events, everyone should realize we cannot in any way rely on government or others to insure our personal safety.
I appreciate President Bernie Machen’s concern in trying to create a safe learning environment with upholding the U’s policy, but the point is just that?IT’S POLICY.
If he or any other person believes preventing permit holding students from carrying is a solution in even the slightest degree, then they’re living in a dream land.
How is that going to work after a shooting has occurred? Um, Mr. Spree Killer, what you did was not a nice thing so we’re uh?we’re not going to allow you to register next semester.
As for Mr. Policy Abiding Student, we’re very sorry you’re dead, but at least we won’t expel you from school!
I resent comments from other writers who describe permit holders as “paranoid” or say that there’s absolutely no good reason anyone should be allowed to carry a weapon. Three years ago, the parents of students at Columbine buried 13 good reasons.
The feel-good policy certainly has no effect on those determined to commit violence, not to mention it doesn’t even apply to visitors on campus.
What next? Continue the Olympic construction of the barb-wire fences until we’re enclosed in a completely weapon free university?
That at least might do something.
