Erin Gibbons, a senior guard on the U women’s basketball team, was named the Mountain West Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday.
In the Utes’ two games of last week (in which they defeated Wyoming 80-59, but lost to No. 23 Colorado State 87-77 in triple overtime), Gibbons scored an MWC-best 22 points per game (on 47.1 percent shooting), added 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per contest, and played the entire 95 minutes of the two combined games.
She was particularly good in the game against CSU, netting career-highs in both points (24) and rebounds (9).
The native of Salmon Arm, B.C., Canada, is first on the U and fifth in the MWC in scoring this year, averaging 16.1 ppg.
This is the first MWC award of her career.
Gibbons and the Utes (8-6, 1 1 MWC) return to action with a two-game MWC road trip this week, taking on Air Force (4 10, 0-1) on Jan. 17, and heading to New Mexico (12-4, 1-1) Jan. 19.
