ARDMORE, Pa.?A man who shot and killed his stepdaughter, wife and her parents before killing himself was clinically depressed but had never become violent, police said Wednesday.
Michael Burgess, 44, called a detective seven hours before the shooting Tuesday night, calmly saying he planned to contest charges arising from a disturbance at a church service where he accused his wife of cheating on him.
“We really don’t know the catalyst for the tragedy that occurred last night,” said Lower Merion Police Superintendent Joseph Daly. “It seems that he was very possessive of his wife and it seems that discussion of divorce precipitated” the shootings.
Authorities identified the victims as Burgess’ wife, Cassandra Watkins; his father in-law, Jim Watkins; mother-in law, Juanita Watkins; and his 14-year-old stepdaughter, Alexandra Wake.
