A collective groan came from Greek Row this weekend after fraternity Kappa Sigma received 52 alcohol citations from the Salt Lake City Police Department.
Of the citations, 40 were for consumption of alcohol by minors. The other 12 were for serving alcohol to minors.
During this party, Kappa Sigma ignored Greek Row policies and an agreed-upon deal with neighboring residents. More than that, Kappa Sigma gave Greek Row a black eye.
For years, the U’s fraternities have strived to better relationships with their neighbors and to sweep their negative impression under the rug.
They have sat down with disgruntled neighbors and negotiated a suitable living arrangement.
Until now, Greek Row has upheld its end of the bargain. The antics of Kappa Sigma could tarnish that livable truce, plunging Greek Row back into a war with its neighbors.
This might sound a little extreme, but more than once the antics of Kappa Sigma have hurt those relations and have only spurred on anti greek neighbors, bent on eliminating the social groups from 100 South.
A few years ago, one Kappa Sigma jumped from a roof and broke his hip during a party. Then two members went through a rape case?they were not convicted. Then a large fight lead to the fraternity’s suspension and finally a fire in the basement caused thousands of dollars of damage to their home.
Some of these incidents were out of the fraternity’s complete control, but not all of them. The fraternity had a quiet year, but has now reclaimed their unwanted spotlight.
Kappa Sigma is sure to receive the necessary punishment from the SLCPD, the Greek Judiciary Council and their national chapter.
However, this is where the punishment should stop. The other fraternities at the U should not been seen in the same light as Kappa Sigma, and neighbors should realize that the vast majority is holding true to its pact for better relations.
It is hoped that Kappa Sigma will once again join that pact.
