Quarterly West, the U’s national literary journal, celebrated 25 years of publication with a special edition last year. The nationally renowned journal publishes both poetry and fiction twice a year.
The anniversary edition is larger than previous publications. “We asked some of our favorite poets to submit, like Pulitzer Prize winner Philip Levine,” said editor Lynn Kilpatrick. “The journal does not usually request submissions.”
The journal attracts professional writers from across the globe. Along with Pulitzer Prize winners, the 25th edition will feature winners of the Quarterly West Novella Competition.
“Recently we have tried to jazz up the journal to make it look more contemporary,” Kilpatrick said. The journal’s cover features art work from local Utah artists.
The publication received 260 fiction submissions, from which 15 were selected. “The selection process takes nearly five to six months; we have graduate students who volunteer as readers,” Kilpatrick said.
Quarterly West is published by graduate students from the English department and is released twice a year. The journal distributed 100 free copies to U students in October. “People don’t know about the journal even though it is produced here on campus,” Kilpatrick said.
Quarterly West is available for purchase at the University Bookstore and at most nationwide bookstores. Further information is available at www.utah.edu/quarterlywest.
