The U’s swimming teams went against both Wyoming and Air Force this weekend, but came home with just one victory.
The men swam well, despite fighting a 32-point deficit in both meets for not carrying a diver on the roster. The U’s last diver, Claine Andrew, quit the team for lack of time, but with no diver, the U automatically loses those points, which creates a very large hole for the swimmers to climb out of.
They couldn’t do it against Wyoming or Air Force, losing to the former 135-96, and to the latter 164.5-129.5.
“The guys did what they could do, but that’s a tough deficit to make up,” said U coach Mike Litzinger.
Cody Rempfer and Evan Castro led the way again for the men, finishing first in their respective events.
The women showed two types of performances this weekend. In the 125.5-117.5 loss to Wyoming, they gave what Litzinger called a “poor performance.”
“To be successful, our first- through 18th-level swimmers need to step up and perform,” he said. “Our first-level swimmers did, but our depth people did not.”
Even though the Utes won eight of 13 events and set four pool records, they were unable to come up with the performances necessary for points.
The women bounced back well against Air Force, getting a 161-137 win. Kristen Kaiser won three individual events to lead the Utes passed the Falcons.
