While Salt Lake City recovers from hosting a celebration of sport in snow and ice, the Utah golf team headed to warmer pastures to begin its spring season.
The golfers placed 13th out of 20 teams at the John Burns Invitational on Feb. 22, held in Honolulu, Hawaii, with an overall score of 891. San Diego State won the tournament with 853 strokes.
It was the first competition for the golf team since the Collegiate Classic from Nov. 8 and 9, 2001.
Freshman Ashdon Woods continued an encouraging rookie campaign. The Lauder, Wyo., native fired two rounds of 71 (1-under par), and a round of even par to finish with a 214 (?2). Woods’ play earned him ninth place.
Sophomore Luke Swilor ended with four more strokes than his teammate, turning in a 22nd-place finish. Swilor shot rounds of 72, 73 and 73.
Freshman Nick Micek was the next-highest U finisher, falling into 70th place with an overall score of 229.
The golfers don’t hit the links again until March 11 and 12 at the San Diego Invitational.
