I caught the Jan. 28 opinion column, “U Has No Legal Leg to Stand on in Gun Debates,” by Nathan Croxford. I have some interesting input to add.
In all my years I have always found that the more you pay people to think, the less they seem to actually do it. Machen and others are no different. These are the same people who drive 75 mph in a 65 mph zone and assume no laws were broken.
I hold an armed security permit, and the classes and continued scrutiny by the Department of Public Licensing make it difficult to consider bad behavior with a permit. I have never known anyone to abuse such a permit once they went to such lengths to acquire one.
I can, however, give many an example where concealed guns have saved many lives in Utah. Can you remember when we had our hostage situation at the library in downtown Salt lake City? It was a plain clothes police officer who drew his police -issue gun and terminated the life of a gun wielding assailant. Yep! That’s right, boys and girls. Concealed weapons save lives.
All police offers are asked to carry their weapons when off duty, and this is in a concealed capacity. I just wish there were more officers out there. But, when you can’t have that, then the next best thing is to arm Harold or Alice and hope they never have to use it.
While I was here at the hospital, we had a gal from China come in and shoot her estranged boyfriend in the groin. Hey, come to think of it, the U had its policy back then, and it really paid off! Not!
