NEWARK, N.J.?A man has been arrested and charged with helping a Sept. 11 hijacker obtain false driver’s licenses and identification cards, federal authorities said Wednesday.
The FBI charged Abdel Rahman Omar Tawfiq Alfauru with producing fake identification.
Some of the bogus Virginia identification has been linked to Hani Hanjour, one of the suspected hijackers of American Airlines Flight 11, according to an FBI complaint filed Feb. 8 and made public with the arrest.
At least four other people have pleaded guilty in similar cases and received sentences ranging from four to 27 months.
The hijackers exploited a loophole that allowed people to obtain ID cards and drivers’ licenses from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles without proof of identity or residency. The loophole, which allowed sworn statements instead, was closed 10 days after the attacks.
