Ever since the U baseball team lost a weekend series against the Arizona Wildcats, it has not tasted defeat in a series.
Four weeks have gone by since the tripleheader with Arizona, and by winning two out of three games against Washington last weekend, the streak continues for Utah. The Utes’ record now stands at 10-8.
The first game of the series was the lone Ute loss, as ace Jason Wylie could not shudder off defensive errors as he allowed only 3 earned runs, but 6 runs total.
Matt Ciaramella scored the Utes’ first run, as he blasted a solo home run, but the Utes were too far back already to make a significant comeback.
Huskies pitcher Shawn Kohn extended his undefeated record to 3-0, as the Utes were downed 11-2.
The Utes returned the favor as they scored 17 runs on 21 hits in the next game. Nate Weese completely demolished the Husky pitching, as he had 5 hits, 3 RBI and 4 runs scored.
Ciaramella drove in 4 runs, while Adam Castleton went 3 for-5 with 3 RBI.
Cheyenne Rushton, who had won the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week award, recorded his second win of the season, as he allowed 4 runs and struck out 5 batters in 6.2 innings of work.
The third game of the series featured usual closer Mitch Maio starting on the mound, and he was successful in his debut.
Maio pitched a complete game and had 11 strikeouts. He only allowed 3 earned runs, and his record is now 3-0.
Freshman shortstop Brett Baldwin batted in Jake Jordison to give the Utes the lead. Castleton kept up his hot hitting, as he had 2 RBI in the Utes’ 8-3 victory.
Utah opens up its home season next weekend as Southern Utah comes to Franklin Covey Field.
