SALT LAKE CITY?All adult felons and juveniles considered “serious youth offenders” would have to submit to DNA testing under a bill passed by the Utah Senate Wednesday.
The bill passed the Senate 27-0. It now goes to Gov. Mike Leavitt for his signature.
Under existaing law, the state collects DNA only from people convicted of homicide or sex related crimes.
The bill would allow the state to buy DNA collection kits and test everyone currently in the state corrections system over a three year period. New prisoners would be tested as they come into the system.
