Four hundred matches. That is the number of matches U men’s tennis coach F.D. Robbins has been at the helm with the team.
“That’s a lot of matches,” Robbins said after the contest against Denver last Friday. “I enjoy what I do. It has its moments, but I enjoy working with the guys.”
The team gave Robbins a nice present when it defeated the University of Denver, 6-1, and kept the team undefeated at home (5-0).
Playing at the Sports Mall for the second time in a row, the Utes had to get a win at home, away from home.
“It’s like having a home match but not having a home match,” Robbins said.
Dave Mercier defeated Denver’s No. 1 player, Magnus Ramfelt, in two sets, 6-4, 7-5. Although the matchup ended in only two sets, it still went nearly one-and-a-half hours.
“I played pretty good tennis because I just came off three losses in a row,” Mercier said. “I served pretty good and that kept me in the match.”
The U just came off an easy 7-0 win over Robert Morris College last Wednesday. The match was so easy, Robbins was worried about how the team would fair against a better opponent like Denver.
“When you schedule [teams like Robert Morris College], you don’t how good they’re going to be. I didn’t know how ready we’d be to play, but the guys did well,” Robbins said.
The U heads back out on the road to play the University of San Diego and Southern California on March 11 and 12. The Utes come back on March 15 for a home matchup with Cal-State Sacramento.
