Slapped in the name of parking?Two drivers argued over a parking spot near the University Services building. One party to the argument said the other party slapped him, pulling his cell phone ear piece out of his ear in the process. The accused slapper denies the assault. The accuser made a citizen’s arrest, but police released the accused slapper with a citation.
Unwise driver caught?A U police officer made a traffic stop on a car driving without a license plate. The driver had no valid driver’s license. The car was neither registered nor insured. On top of all these infractions, the driver also had three outstanding warrants for his arrest. Police booked him into jail on the warrants and cited him for the traffic offenses. The car was impounded.
Stealing toys from sick children?Someone stole a set of 12 toys kept at a clinic in University Hospital.
Road rage?While driving on campus, two drivers got into a dispute U police are labelling “road rage.” Driver one claimed driver two cut him off. Driver two claimed driver one made an illegal lane changed, pulled behind him and rammed him with his car. Driver one said driver two stopped his car abruptly, forcing driver one into the rear of driver two’s car. A passenger in driver one’s car said both of them were “jerks” and driver one intentionally drove into the other car.
Changing minds?The Salt Lake City Police Department told the U Police Department there was a man at University Hospital with an outstanding warrant. Salt Lake officers said they wanted U police to hold him until they could pick him up. A U officer detained the man. The Salt Lake officers changed their minds and decided not to pick him up, so instead, the U officer booked the man into jail on the warrant.
Vandalized car?A student reported someone put seven long scratches in his car while it was parked in the lot east of the Union.
Burglarized car?A student reported someone burglarized his car while it was parked in the lot east of the Merrill Engineering Building. The thief left no clear sign of how she/he gained access to the car, but stole the car’s CD player.
Bike theft?A student parked her bike on the east side of the Marriott Library. While studying in the library, the weather turned too cold to ride the bike home, so she left it overnight and got a ride home. Someone stole the bike. It had been secured with only a chain.
Supply theft?A University Hospital supply director suspects an ongoing theft problem in his division. A recent inventory check indicated someone had stolen a hand sanitizer, trash bags, leather and latex gloves, flashlights and batteries.
Police tip of the week?Police ask the U population to remember most crime is committed in response to the opportunity, so the best prevention is to eliminate opportunities by ensuring doors are locked, valuables are not left in parked cars, et cetera.
