MELONES, Calif.?Authorities have recovered the bodies of three men believed dumped by the mob in a deep lake, and searched for more corpses on Tuesday.
Two bodies were pulled Sunday from beneath a bridge in New Melones Lake, a reservoir in the Sierra Nevada foothills. A third body was found under a second bridge over the lake Monday.
All three were recovered by a remotely operated submersible vehicle and brought to the surface by divers.
FBI spokesman Nick Rossi said more bodies could be submerged in the water more than 200 feet deep.
Rossi would not comment on the victims’ cause of death. He said the investigation began in another FBI office, but gave no further details.
The FBI also is investigating whether the body of a man found floating in the lake Oct. 18 with his hands bound and a plastic bag over his head was a victim of an organized crime hit, Rossi said.
