It happened again.
For the second straight time, the debut home game for the U softball team will not take place as scheduled because of weather. The game with Utah State that was to take place today has been postponed until April 23. Ute Field still has snow on it and simply is not in playable condition.
Utah’s games with No. 2 Arizona were canceled earlier this month because of excessive snowfall.
But U coach Mona Stevens maintains her team is not too frustrated and wants to start conference play.
“They’re not wrapped up in that so much,” she said. “They’re trying to keep their focus on conference and taking it to whomever, wherever we are.”
The team will take some time off, as it prepares for its next game, when it starts conference play against SDSU in San Diego on March 29.
The team will rest, practice, continue to work on fundamentals and try to maintain what confidence it has left after a 10-26 start.
The poor record is deceiving, though, according to Stevens. Of those 26 losses, only one has been to a team not in the top 25. Utah has played 25 games against the top 25.
No one in the conference even comes close to that. BYU has played only nine games against the 25 best.
Stevens also compared the team’s statistics to BYU and San Diego State’s?the two top contenders in the conference?saying they’re almost identical to the U’s.
